Metacam is a prescription drug specifically approved
and labeled for use in dogs by the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) that can only be obtained by prescription from your veterinarian
to control pain and actually improves the outcome of the disease
or surgery.
Metacam contains as active ingredient, meloxicam,
a drug that has demonstrated effectiveness against fever which belongs
to the class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). These
drugs relieve inflammation and pain effectively by inhibiting the
synthesis of chemicals called prostaglandins but they can adversely
affect kidney function by causing sudden severe injury to the kidneys
and liver injury, with concomitant elevation of liver enzymes in
blood tests.
While generally safe and effective when prescribed
by a veterinarian, Metacam may cause side effects in some animals
including stomach problems and loss of appetite, vomiting, intestinal
ulcers, intestinal bleeding, dark or tarry stools as a result from
bleeding into the intestines, and peritonitis caused from intestinal
perforation. This medication should not be used in animals with
known hypersensitivity or allergy to meloxicam because some of the
side effects can cause life-threatening proportions even in non-susceptible
pets, and they can occur relatively suddenly.
Also, avoid this medication in animals with a history
of inflammation, bleeding, or perforation of the stomach or intestinal
mucosa or in animals with dehydration or low blood pressure the
same as in puppies less than 6 weeks of age. Metacam may not interact
with other medications, and it is important to determine if other
drugs your pet is receiving might interact with meloxicam, including
aspirin, corticosteroids, and ACE-inhibitors including enalapril,
benazepril or quinapril among others.
Young animals tend to have a lower threshold to pain
while older and debilitated pets may not show much response to pain
but feel it just the same; it is in your hands to relieve them from
such conditions.

Metacam (meloxicam) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory
(NSAID) oral suspension for use for the treatment of pain and
inflammation in dogs. It is available as 10 ml, 32 ml or 100
ml dropper bottles. It should not be used in the last third
of pregnancy and should not be used in nursing animals. Do not
use in animals with heart, kidney or liver disease. The usual
dose is 0.1 mg / lb as a single dose on the first day then 0.05
mg / lb given once every 24 hours thereafter. |

0.05mg/lb once a day as a maintenance dose. The medication can be
given using the drop dispensing container or by using the included
dose syringe that attaches to the bottle. Kidney and liver function
should be monitored during treatment.
